Communicating During the Event

For the next event, someone needs to make guts to make those RVS overhead radios functioning so you can talk car to car realistically. Maybe find a common inexpensive CB radio, set to a standard frequency and use that for the guts of the RVS?

In hindsight better communication would have resulted in even better pics. Most of the pics here were spur of the moment happenings as the bikes did their thing and the cars were out most of the days going to different sites at different times. It was a huge event with an excellent turnout. As a fan it was so much to take in, so may stories and people to talk to that I know I wasnt thinking properly, overloaded. So much I didnt get done but I still feel like I got so much more than I expected.

I have thought about that in the past.
A few points as to why it would be difficult to put a UHF in there:

The kit and wiring to make the lights flash take up a lot of room, so installing the guts of a UHF would be almost impossible.
Price wise most people would baulk at the idea of paying well over $800 dollars for a UHF/ RVS
Plus the fact it would take twice the time to make etc (again increasing the cost)

(And i should mention the pic you put up is of my first version i made, the newer versions look a lot better.. )

I guess the only way to do it would be to remote mount the main body components of the radio else where in the vehicle and just have the mic and speaker wired to the RVS. Anything can be done with a little ingenuity.

2 things i heard you cant do are:

1. Taking a splinter out of a flea with a power pole

2. Removing fly shit from a bag of pepper with boxing gloves on.

Everything else is fair game

There is a UHF manufacturer who makes a "2" part UHF. It had a remote head unit (volume and channel select) and the transciever could be mounted well away from the head unit by a simple phone cable.

May have been uniden. Was long ago and installed a few in aircraft i used to work on.
The other obvious problem is that if i buy a UHF and mess with the unit the warranty would also be void.

But the comms problem could be fixed with el cheapo hand held UHF units which retail for $99 a pair!
They work up to 1km.

the hand helds should be easier to disassemble and place in the unit, depending on how much area you have to work with. Hooking up an external antena should increase the effective range of the unit?

The units with the remote head were made by uniden and other manufacturers. I problem is the head unit normaly had a lcd display and would be a little tricky to dismember and relocate.

Taking a standard old school cb and running and extension speaker and remote mic would be reasonably east to do. With a flick of a switch you can have it change to the external pa speaker. I think a lot of the old school cb radios had a provision for external speaker with a 3.5 jack.

Further to this, we have one of the old vic pol radios at work along with other stuff. Will check it out and see what i can come up with.
