Unused & Repurposed ideas in Mad Max movies.

In this video I'm taking a look behind the scenes at unused and repurposed ideas that carried over between Mad Max movies without the audience even realizing it.
Check it out and let me know what you think!

Great video! I'm now wondering if Miller always had the idea, at least since BT, of Max wanting to rebuild his car (as shown in the comics). It doesn't appear to be one of Max's motivations in BT, at least not explicitly.

What will be the theme of your next video?

I have a few ideas:

- The evolution of Max's insanity.
- The evolution of cars in the MM universe
- How to make a Mad Max movie and why nobody successfully copied it.
- general myths and facts video (why Tom Hardy's Max has a strange accent, Furiosa's past etc)

I don't know for sure but there's a high chance that he had it in mind already just judging by the amount of ideas he had that got repurposed. In fact a whole lot of MMBT is Miller cherry picking unused ideas from MM2, I wouldn't be surprised if he planned on Max to rebuild his car in MMBT already. I'm trying to get in contact with Ed Verreaux who designed the thing he must definitely knows what the idea behind it was but it's kind of difficult to get a hold of him.

Thank you a lot, I appreciate! I always liked this aspect of MM2 and BT: when Max's V8 Interceptor gets destroyed, he has lost it for good, can't "rebuild" it and has to find new ways to survive. Which is why I wasn't particularly fond of the comics/Fury Road in which Max was just obsessed by the idea of having his car back at any costs (no character development) because then it doesn't matter if his "new" car gets destroyed again. So I thought "maybe McCarthy or Sexton came up with this idea". After all, if I'm not mistaken, McCarthy came up with the idea of Max finding a new love for Furiosa. Well, your video has changed the way I now see BT... The latter being "two films in one" might partially explain it: Max wanted to rebuild his car before the crack of the earth; after this event he gave up? You also said in another video that you couldn't get your hands on the original script of BT... This film is fully of mysteries. Anyway, this is fascinating.

No no, I do have the original script for MMBT, but I don't have a whole lot of production documents from that movie. I do have a lot of them for MM2, that's why I could piece together the timeline between MM1 and MM2. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to have a look at some documents created by Terry Hayes regarding the 15 years between MM2 and MM3 but again, it's kind of difficult to get a hold of.

As for Max being obsessed with his belongings - that is far from lazy writing, in fact it's the culmination of Max's insanity. By the time of Fury Road Max would've almost completely lost his mind in a literal sense and the only things reminding him of who he was was his car and belongings. That's why he desperately needed his car back. It all ties into his trek to the "Plains of silence" which isn't even mentioned as Max's destination at the beginning of Fury Road, but that's where he wants to go. Keep in mind that Max's arc I'm telling you about now was the central point of the original version of Fury Road. The 2015 iteration has all of those aspects really downplayed to the point where it just doesn't make any sense... for example, Tom Hardy's 'bad accent'. It's not bad, Tom was playing Max who literally forgot how to speak! Mel Gibson's Max would've mumbled even worse had he took on the role. See this is why I need to make this video on Max's insanity because it might clear up a lot of misconceptions on why Max acts the way it does, unfortunately a lot of his actions were misunderstood, mostly because they rebooted the movie from 2003 and all of the important aspects were put aside in favor of action and visuals I believe. Fury Road would've made much more sense had it been done in 2003 prior to being rebooted.

First of all, I've watched all your videos so I'm familiar about the things you're talking about. Secondly, I'm under the impression that you didn't fully understand me.

In the old timeline, Max lost his wife, his son, his dog, his V8, his second dog. All of this matter because he lost it for good (this is life and he has to move on). In the BT we got, Max seems to have almost made "peace with himself"; he's not motivated by vengeance anymore, he's just trying to survive when he's not helping people in the process (there's character development). Indeed, he does care about his belongings: his camel wagon, his camels, etc. which are new stuff he gathered after MM2 instead of him being able to "resuscitate" old things. By the way, like you said in a video, it was supposed to be the last entry of the series at the time because Miller was probably aware that there wasn't much more to tell about Max without getting repetitive.

About "Max's insanity", in the 3 films there's no real indications (nor foreshadowing) of Max becoming "crazier"; apart from the famous speech he gave in the first film (the "rat circus"). In fact, he's pretty rational, his decisions make sense (he really seems sane). Besides, he's obviously far from being the most "mad"!

About "Max's insanity" in the new timeline: well, it's far from being subtle since he has PTSD in Fury Road. It's arguably a poor depiction. Besides, it isn't really consistent: let's say that Max is insane then, if we're talking seriously, then he wouldn't have been able to rebuild his car in the first place (and Iet's not mention the fact that the resources are supposed to be scarce). It wouldn't have changed a lot if Mel Gibson was involved. Maybe you find the all "old road warrior clinging to his identity" fascinating but I think it's pretty limited. Even the new timeline doesn't make a lot of sense: so now Max is traumatized for not having saved Glory and her mother... Except that this Max has already been through MM1, MM2 and BT! So it's ludicrous.

My point is that there's a lot of people (in Miller's team) that are writing the new timeline as "if" BT never happened. Except that it did happen. You can see the same thing about "Mad Max Asylum": Max was supposed to appear with his dear V8 and another dog! An imagery similar to Mad Max 2 instead of something brand new.

So I wouldn't say that it's lazy writing... But it's far from being good writing, to be honest. It's a good thing that we got Fury Road. On the other hand, it didn't bring anything new on the table (apart the plains of silence and Max falling in love for Furiosa, elements that got scrapped or neglected). Alas, it is a regressive experience (and Warner Brothers is only partially to blame).

The thing is that Max really hasn't made any peace with himself in MMBT, there's a lot of stuff that was cut out from the film that really showed Max's descent into madness and how his past caught up with him. After I found that out it really became clear that Miller was progressively damaging Max's psyche and it's probably why he wanted to kill him off at the end of MMBT. Instead he didn't and he uped the ante for Fury Road.
I think he decided to leave out all those things from MMBT because it's a PG13 movie and things would've gone too heavy for this kind of a flick but the progression of Max's insanity is in there and it logically culminated with Fury Road where Max is literally hallucinating.

Fair enough, I believe you about MMBT. If you don't mind my asking, I have a couple of questions:

1. Did Miller regret his choice of having Max lost his car at the end of The Road Warrior?

2. Are the comics "true to the vision"? I know that they're canon. Say, if Mel Gibson was involved (instead of Tom Hardy) then would the backstory about Glory and her mother be the same? Is there more to the comics (were they rushed or something)? Was Miller satisfied by the final product?

3. Do you have "mind blowing" informations that you're going to share in future videos?

4. Would Fury Road be completely different if Byron Kennedy was still alive?

5. Are you going to interview Miller?
