Looks to me like the artist has, for some reason, simply drawn Max holding a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun as if it were a handgun.

That drawing looks like it was done early and without much info, maybe a teaser poster.
I was too young, but was Miller as secretive back then, as he is now with his movies?

Different time, different world, and regardless of that before it came out no one probably knew or cared about it :). That's my guess anyway.

Here in the states Ithaca firearms made a model of double barrel shotgun/pistol called the auto & burglar that had a pistol grip that would allow you to hold the weapon in the manner depicted in the poster. I know chances are good it was just an artistic liberty, but maybe the artist had seen one.
