Myself, I wouldn't go shorter than 20" for any purpose, be it hunting or defense.
The shorter the barrel is, the less accurate.

Why exactly. Paying the big bucks and going through the trouble of getting a Class 3 license, if you're even granted one, just to have a Mad Max prop? I think the Airsoft route would be a better, cheaper option. Molding and casting a dummy receiver and attaching barrels and furniture would even be cheaper, if you have the skills. I also think you can have one deactivated by welding barrel plugs and receiver parts in place. You'll need red tips for the barrels, though.

As far as shortening barrels goes and turning a 12 gauge into a pistol it is an extremly stupid thing to do. When I cut down my 12 gauge (please bear in mind I was a very clueless teenager and now I am a clueless adult) I fired I once holding it like a pistol with 1 hand and the kick was so severe it nearly broke my arm and looking back now realise how close I came to accidently shooting my face off. The jackass boys would have put it in their movies.
I was lucky and learned a very valuable lesson.
I still have this gun but it is now un fireable.
Just one of my many lucky near misses in my life.

No shit... anyone who has ever fired a 12 gauge would know you really need a stock against your shoulder... And the right part of your shoulder... I've heard enough horror stories about stocks and collarbones... even ribs... How that happens is beyond me...

Or 2 hand operation, which would look awkward. Most likely why they all fire them single handed...
