What's New

18-May-2009
  • Mad Max 4 is on the movie again, "industry sources say"... No word on exactly who the source is, or any official word from Kennedy Miller at this point, but certainly the Australian press has been all over this story today, in the papers, on TV and on radio. Check out the articles printed in today's Herald Sun and The Age Newspaper.

12-Apr-2009
  • A few years from then...

Mad Max was released in Australia 30 years ago today. It premiered at the East End Cinemas on Bourke Street, which, unlike the film itself, have long since disappeared. If you look above, you can take a glimpse of what the scene was like, some 30 years ago...

  • You can also find some newspaper advertising from the original East End Cinema showing on the Mad Max advertising page (nothing new for you regular visitors though, sorry!).
  • John Eaves has posted his own tribute to the 30th anniversary on his movie art blog - take a look over at http://johneaves.wordpress.com/

31-Mar-2009
  • Maurice Jarre has passed away, aged 84. To Mad Max fans he would be most known as the composer of the "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" score, but beyond this he had more than 150 scores to his name, and several oscars. More detailed information is available through Google News, and most likely also through your regular local news sources.

15-Mar-2009
  • This year's Melbourne Comedy Festival features "The Mad Max Remix"... the Mad Max trilogy has been edited down, and will be screened silently behind a team of actors, improvisers and musicians, who will turn the tale of Max and the last of the V8s into an uplifting teen movie of one man's redemption through dance. Well that's what the comedy festival web page says anyway. The show will run from April 1st to April 26th, full details at their page.
  • For those of you not already Maxed out by Mad Max events this month, there is another! The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles will be playing the Mad Max Trilogy on Friday March 20th & Saturday March 21st. Some of the guys from the discussion forum may be attending, you can read that thread here, or head on over to the Beverly Cinema web page for the full screening details.
  • It seems that the MTV Movies Blog followed up their Mad Max 4 article on March 5th with another article on March 11th, stating that George Miller would still be interested in pursuing this as a live action piece, if given the opportunity to do so. See the Mad Max 4 page for further detail.

10-Mar-2009
  • Mad Max will be screened in Belgium on March 21st during the OFFSCREEN film festival, in Brussels. The screening is part of the wider Ozploitation program they are running, which also includes screenings of Stunt Rock, The Long Weekend, Dead-End Drive In, The Man From Hong Kong and of course, Not Quite Hollywood. Festival guests will include Mark Hartley, Brian Trenchard Smith, and Richard Brennan, who will all appear for a Q&A at the Not Quite Hollywood screening. See the film festival web site for further details.

6-Mar-2009
  • The MTV Movies Blog has announced that Mad Max 4 is back on - and this time it's Anime! An interesting route to take - one that I'm personally not sure about. Most people come back to the original trilogy for the cars and the action - quite basically their connection with the reality of that world, and the action within it. I'm not convinced that an Anime incarnation would hit the intended audience with the same impact. You could certainly explore other stories in the Mad Max world going this route (think Star Wars: The Clone Wars or Animatrix), but I'm unsure about presenting the next feature this way. Wait and see I guess.
  • Note that this news has also been published at slashfilm.com and worstpreviews.com (and I would guess other sites) - they just seem to be referencing the MTV story above, with no further information.

Eric Bana Love The Beast Movie Poster

    • There will also be a "Love The Beast" Drive-In Night at Gepps Cross Drive-In in Adelaide, on the 28th of March. Gates open at 7pm, movie at 8pm. There are plenty of clubs organising to be a part of this one, so if you're in the area, check it out.
  • For those of you in Sydney, Mad Max is screening in 35mm from March 12th to 14th at Cronulla Cinemas, and March 15th to 18th at Beverly Hills Cinemas. The respective web sites contain the screening times, just scroll down to see the listings.

28-Feb-2009
  • It's been a few years since I worked on the Google Earth locations files - there are now higher resolution maps available in Google for many locations, and the files were also missing some locations, so time for an update. So far I have updated the Mad Max locations file. I still had a few issues pinpointing a couple of spots from the air - if you think any need further work, or if there's anything else to add, please just contact me.

    • "Love The Beast Drive-In Night": Street Machine is presenting the Drive-In Premiere of Eric Bana's "Love The Beast" on Wednesday March 11th, at Blacktown in Western Sydney, and Coburg in Melbourne. The plan is to jam both venues with street machines, vans, customs, and of course plenty of coupes! Street Machine show bags for the first 30 cars through the gates, see the Street Machine Page for further info, and also the official web page for the film at www.lovethebeast.com.au.

  • Welcome... to another edition of madmaxmovies.com... For those familiar with the page, you can clearly see that I've changed the layout. Everything should still be exactly where it was, if you do find anything amiss, please just contact me, and I'll do my best to fix it up as quick as I can.

15-Feb-2009
  • Channel 10 News in Melbourne ran a brief segment regarding the loss of Reg Evans this week, I have placed this online and you can view it here.
  • Mel Gibson also appeared as part of an appeal on behalf of those affected by the Victorian Bushfire this week, you can view that segment here.

9-Feb-2009
  • Reg Evans, the Station Master in Mad Max, amongst other roles, has been reported dead in the Kinglake bushfires. He was 80. Further information can be found online at The Age Newspaper, and likely in other news services. Communities affected by the bushfires can be supported via the Victorian Bushfire Fund, see the Red Cross Page for further details.

15-Jan-2009
  • On Saturday January 31st, a Mad Max 30th Anniversary screening will be held at the Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS), including a few special guests. Please see the events page for further details, and also read through the full details as posted on the discussion forum.
  • For those outside Australia, never fear - you still have your chance! On the same day, the entire Mad Max Trilogy will be screening at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, CA. There will be a discussion following Mad Max 2 (Road Warrior) with cinematographer Dean Semler. Please also see the events page for the full details.

2-Jan-2009

    • Please note that ticketing for Back 2 The Max 2008 "The Dinner" is now finalised. There are a very limited number of unused tickets available - please email or confirm with the Little River Historical Society before placing an order - availability cannot be guaranteed at this point. This applies to the dinner event ONLY, all other displays for the Saturday / Sunday are of course open to all comers throughout the weekend, and there are still tickets available to the cinema screening.

4-Oct-2008

    • Back 2 The Max 2008 is now less than a week away, and this is you final chance to purchase tickets to the dinner on Saturday October 11th. Catering numbers for this part of the event will be finalised Tuesday October 7th, so please make sure your ticket order is in by the end of Tuesday if you're coming to this one. You can order online (credit card), or through the Little River Historical Society's page (cheque / money order).

1-Oct-2008

    • It is official... the Mayor from Mad Max is on his way, and with approval to travel on the official Mayoral scooter no less! It has been voted unanimously and approved in the latest Council Minutes (jump to page 121), and  Bertrand Cadart is on his way to Back 2 The Max. Bertrand, better known to some of you as Clunk from Mad Max, and also the owner of La Parisienne, will be there to meet and greet, so make sure to come by and say hello. Bertrand is currently the elected Mayor of Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, and you can read more about him from the Sunday Tasmanian here and here, and also in Tasmania's local government news, here, here, here and here.

26-Sep-2008

    • Just a quick note that seating for the Back 2 The Max dinner is now more than 50% allocated - if you're intending on being at this one (and I'd truly recommend any fans not miss this), make sure you order online (credit card), or through the Little River Historical Society's page (cheque / money order) as soon as you can. With various guest speakers, auctions, and a few surprises, it promises to be a great night.

23-Sep-2008
  • I've been contacted by someone with an XA Coupe for sale, not normally the sort of thing I'd advertise here, however this one is located in Northern Ireland! So, given that there would not be many others in that part of the world, this potentially represents an opportunity for someone. It is a March 1973 XA GT (JG66NM) with a V8 351, less than 38,000 miles on the clock, and was imported into the UK in the 80s. You can view some photos here - be warned, it has been left outside, and appears to be in poor shape based on the photos, along with having had various "localisation" modifications done to the front and rear lights. If interested, you can contact the owner, Mike, on 0845 017 5017, mobile 07731 826 398, or through the web site http://www.starcarhire.co.uk/.

19-Sep-2008

    • Please note that more than a third of the Platinum passes to the Back 2 The Max dinner event are now allocated. If you're intending on being involved in this part of the event, please be sure to book your tickets early - you can order online (credit card), or through the Little River Historical Society's page (cheque / money order). The number of tickets available to the dinner is strictly fixed due to venue and catering constraints - no further tickets will be allocated on this. Please note that this is the only part of the event where fixed numbers will apply - other events and displays are not restricted to specific numbers.

17-Sep-2008
  • George Miller is certainly confirmed as a guest on Enough Rope with Andrew Denton, the taping will be on Monday September 29th. To book audience tickets please visit http://www.abc.net.au/tv/enoughrope/audience/ or call (02) 9217 2288. The full invite can be found here (note that it is a Microsoft Word Document, your browser may or may not display it, depending on your configuration).

15-Sep-2008

    • It's a get out of gaol free card! Or "get out of jail", for some of you...! Back when Mad Max was originally filmed, the cars and bikes were used as every day vehicles on the road, often driven by cast and crew in costume. Obviously to the Victoria Police of the day, this occasionally presented issues - if you see the Toecutter gang tearing past on crazy bikes with crowbars and cleavers, you're likely to want to pull them up. So this letter was given out to help them explain the situation, and keep them on the film set, instead of handcuffed in the back of a passing police car. Those of you attending Back 2 The Max in costume might try you're luck printing a copy out... although I'm doubtful this will work some 30 years on!

13-Sep-2008
  • The web site has been moved to the new location! The discussion forum is operational again, and everything else should be online also. If you note any issues, please let me know.

6-Sep-2008

4-Sep-2008
  • It has been advertised that George Miller is Andrew Denton's guest on Enough Rope next Monday on ABC1 (Australia). The official Enough Rope lists Margaret Fulton as the guest however, wait and see I guess...

30-Aug-2008

    • Back 2 The Max - Mad Max 30th Anniversary! Ticketing for the event is now available, please visit the Little River Historical Society's web site for full ticketing information, the schedule of events (ticketed and non-ticketed events) and further details.

27-Aug-2008

17-Jul-2008

  • A new section has been added to the archives, this time for web pages. A number of Mad Max pages have come and gone over the years, here I've started restoring a few of particular interest that have otherwise disappeared from the web, and are no longer available in their original locations.

13-Jul-2008

    • Auto Art have released their 1:18 scale die cast Interceptor - see the listing at their web site for further detail. You might try checking your local hobby stores to buy local instead of online, I know they can be had for around $165 locally to me (Melbourne, Australia).

1-Jul-2008

  • 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of the completion of filming for Mad Max. To celebrate, the Little River Historical Society is holding a Mad Max 30th Anniversary Event on the weekend of October 11 & 12. There will be car displays, memorabilia and information displays, tours of the locations, special guests and other fan events. The full schedule is still to be confirmed, but mark the dates in your calendar now, and further updates will be posted here when they become available.

  • The forum has been restored from a backup, the last couple of week's posts have been lost, but unfortunately they could not be recovered. Everything else now appears to be OK.

30-Nov-2007

  • The database for the forum has become corrupted (it looks like my ISP upgraded their version of MySQL, and killed it), and the forum is currently offline. I will attempt to restore the backup again within the next day or so, I've had a couple of attempts since yesterday, but it's not bringing the old posts back online at the moment for some reason.

26-Oct-2007

8-Oct-2007

  • Bruce Spence (the Gyro Captain & Jebediah) will be a guest at the Star Walking expo in Melbourne on October 20 / 21 (Bruce having appeared in Revenge Of The Sith). 15-Aug-2007

  • The migration of the discussion forum is almost finalised, and the actual upgrade will now occur in the next 24 hours. If you have a current login and don't remember your password, now is your last chance to make sure your email address is up to date so that you can use the reset password feature when the new software comes online!

7-Aug-2007

  • Roadwar! The next Roadwar event is fast approaching, happening on August 24 - 26. Please check out the discussion forum here, and also the dedicated web site at http://www.roadwarusa.com.
  • The current madmaxmovies.com discussion forum is being upgraded to a new version sometime in the next week or so. I will try to keep any disruption to a minimum, please see the forum post for additional info.

16-May-2007

    • The Road Warrior has been released on both HD-DVD (pictured) and Blu-Ray. The release includes a commentary track by George Miller (I do believe his first) and Dean Semler. You can see the listings for either release at Amazon, find the HD-DVD listing here and the Blu-Ray listing here. 25-Jan-2007

  • George Miller has been nominated for an Academy Award for Happy Feet, and was featured in another article in the Age today, where (among other things) Mad Max 4 was again mentioned. Sounds like its still planned to happen, but it is probably a couple of films and a few years away yet...

25-Dec-2006

  • Dr George was interviewed by The Age (Melbourne) for the release of Happy Feet in Australia. You can read the article here.

14-Dec-2006

  • Amongst the publicity for Happy Feet, George Miller has done a few interviews of late, and Mad Max IV has had a few mentions. Of interest are the articles at Moviehole, and an article at scifi.com.
  • Sorry for the infrequent updates. I've been away on and off the last few months.

15-Nov-2006

  • For those who haven't seen it yet, the Mad Max trilogy has now been released as a DVD box set for the first time in Australia. They unfortunately appear to be the same (no extras) DVDs that have been previously available here, so there's only really some new cover artwork on offer in this lot (which appears to be a copy of the older UK box set art). Hopefully we can get some of the already released elsewhere special edition extras released locally some day. And the old making of Thunderdome would be nice too.

26-Aug-2006

  • This Sunday night, August 27th, Emil Minty will appear on "Where Are They Now" on Channel 7 (Australia) at 6.30pm.

24-Jul-2006 / 25-Jul-2006

  • 25 years ago today... July 24th and 25th 2006 mark the 25th anniversary of the Humungus machine destruction and Tanker roll over stunts from the climax of Mad Max 2. Follow the link for a more detailed account of Dennis William's precision stunt work.

22-Jul-2006

  • 25 years ago today... July 22nd 2006 marks the 25th anniversary of the explosive destruction of the Mad Max 2 compound, near the completion of filming back in 1981. See the new sub page for a more detailed account of the events of the day.

19-Jul-2006

  • The Grapevine Heritage Foundation is presenting a Mad Max double feature at the Palace Theatre in Grapevine, Texas on Friday, July 21st. It will kick off at 7:00 PM with Mad Max and continue at 9:00 with Road Warrior. Grapevine is located in the heart of the Dallas - Ft. Worth metroplex.

9-Jul-2006

  • An "original" MFP bronze badge is being auctioned on eBay currently (auction starts July 28). It actually looks like an MFP Clothing Branch badge to me (see the badge page here), and the fact that it's partnered with a MFP4073 ID tag which is almost certainly a replica seems to point that way. You can find the auction here. If anyone has more info on this one, please send me an email.

22-Jun-2006

  • The Road Warrior (70mm blow up print) will be shown again in Los Angeles at the Avco Theatre, 1328 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, at 7:30 on June 23rd. Apologies for the late notice.

    • The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, is showing a 70mm blow-up print of the Road Warrior, this coming Thursday, May 11, at 7:30 PM.  See the post on the discussion forum for some further details (don't look too close at the ad to the left for details, it's an old ad for an original 70mm showing from the 1980's...)

17-Apr-2006

13-Feb-2006

  • Discussion forum is online again. Looks like a dozen or so posts were lost while the migration was being performed - I can't get them back, sorry!
  • Email contact form is working again. Anyone who used this in the past week, best bet is to try again, as I probably didn't receive what was sent.

12-Feb-2006

  • My ISP has migrated the web site to a new platform. I can see that the forum is not working (I have lodged a request with them which will hopefully bring that back online soon). It also appears that the contact form is not working, it doesn't return an error, but the email does not seem to come through. Will try to rectify that one ASAP as well. Sorry for the inconvenience.

10-Feb-2006

  • Sony have announced Mad Max in their UMD / DVD bundle line up for April 25. According to the Sony Pictures web site, Mad Max UMD (Playstation Portable) has been out since November 2005, although I can't actually find any reference to that elsewhere.

  • The Z Owners club have organised another Mad Max bike run, although I'm guessing its on a smaller scale than last year's 25th Anniversary run. I haven't received any detailed information directly, but you can check out what's on their web site over at http://www.zowners.com.au/

10-Oct-2005

  • OK, the web site has been 'hacked' again twice in the past week by people with too much time on their hands. I gather the problem is a security hole in Microsoft Front Page (either because I edited some pages there, or because or the server extensions installed here). If anyone can offer me any tips, please get in touch. Note that I don't have direct control over the servers, I just buy the space from an ISP. Thanks.

5-Oct-2005

23-Sep-2005

  • George Miller will be interviewed this coming Sunday, September 25th, on 60 Minutes in Australia. Channel 9, 7:30pm. I've no details on the exact content, just the snippet shown on the ads. Check ninemsn.com.au for additional info.

8-Sep-2005

  • Interesting interview with George Miller in today's Age newspaper about Australian drama and Kennedy Miller, you can read it online here.

19-Aug-2005

  • I've been contacted by a collector who wishes to sell from his collection (form one collector to another, no rights given or implied) his 35mm film reels of Mad Max, Road Warrior and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. If you are interested, please get in touch via the contact form, and I'll put you in touch. Note that the prints are currently located within the USA, and it is expected that long distance shipping would be quite expensive due to the weight.

  • Apparently mechanical failure prevented both coupes appearing together at the All Ford Day, so for those who missed out, they are now pictured above... thanks Nelson!
  • According to SF Weekly, Mad Max is being played in 70mm on 'Saturday' (presumably August 6th) at the Castro. Now, given that it was Mad Max 2 (Road Warrior) that was actually released in 70mm, and given that they've listed the year as 1981, I'm assuming this will actually be a presentation of Mad Max 2 / Road Warrior. Worth checking out if you're in the area. See their web page for further details, 5 screenings total.

  • Double Take - The Sydney boys, Nelson Tromp and Scott Page, will have their two Black on Black replicas on display together at the All Ford Day at Warwick Farm Racecourse (Sydney) this coming Sunday, July 31st. Plenty of other Fords will be there as well, so head on over.
  • The Brisbane International Film Festival opened today, and as part of the schedule they will be playing the Mad Max Trilogy back to back on Saturday August 6th at Suncorp Piazza, starting at 5pm. • The Mad Max locations file for Google Earth has been updated again, and now includes: Bridge Inn Road; Dog Trap Road; Gellies Road and Emu Creek Bridge (marked precisely); Melbourne Uni Car Park (marked very closely now, but it's under a cloud!); Claremont Street South Yarra; and Clunes. I think everything (that I know of) is marked now, let me know if anything has been missed.
  • Mel Gibson is working on a new movie, Apocalypto. Read about it here, here, here and here (and probably lots of other places too).

21-Jul-2005

  • The Mad Max locations file for Google Earth has been updated, now includes: Pretty Sally Roadhouse (approx); Nightrider's Head On (approx); Port Melbourne Gasworks (approx); House Ruins; Exford Road; Johnny The Boy's Overpass; and Max Tends His Wounds (cut scene). I've also added some other locations of interest, notably the Ford Australia Proving Ground. A couple of the existing locations have also been placed a little more precisely.

All very Australian in their content, and well worth a look to all you locals. Read a review / interview from the Australian.
  • Mad Max 4 reports again, here, here and here.
  • I've updated the Mad Max locations page with some Google Maps links that Christopher Bieg was kind enough to send in, just scroll down the page to find the links (5 total).

  • The guys at Google have built a great new product - Google Earth. With it you can explore satellite images of the Earth, including, of course, all your favourite Mad Max locations. So first, head on over to http://earth.google.com/, download it, and install it. Then come back here, and download the file of Mad Max locations and the file of Mad Max 2 locations. Once Google Earth is installed on your PC, you should just be able to double click those files and the locations will load in automatically. Now, some maps are more detailed than others, so many I've pinpointed exactly, but some I've listed as (approx), meaning I will come back to them and pinpoint a bit closer with some other maps. There are also locations missing at the moment (particularly Mad Max 2), which I haven't been able to locate even approximately without some other maps. If you locate anything yourself that isn't located in my files, please send it on over and I'll add it for everyone. Have fun!

If you sent me a question of a general nature, you should probably ask on the forum, because the probability is that you won't get a direct answer (and I haven't had time to check the forum itself much either). For everyone else who has sent / offered various contributions to the page, thanks for sending what you have, and I'll do my best to get it all online over the coming weeks / months. Thanks.

  • As some of you may be aware, Bigpond (Telstra), who are my ISP, have had massive problems with their email servers for the past week. It is quite possible that if you sent me an email, that it did not come through (although plenty of SPAM and viruses still seemed to make it, so there you go). I also know that some emails I sent out apparently did not make it, as people have emailed me follow up queries to emails I know I answered. I've resent a selection of emails just in case - if you get two identical emails from me, that's why, better two than none I guess.
